OPAL

Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) at Our School

At our school, we believe that high-quality play is an essential part of every child’s development. That’s why we are proud to adopt the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) framework—a proven, award-winning program designed to transform school playtimes into rich, creative, and active experiences.

We are fully committed to ensuring that every child receives a minimum of 45 minutes of active, outdoor play every single day, regardless of the weather. Play is not just a break from work; it is a vital part of learning and well-being.

Why Outdoor Play Matters

Research consistently shows that daily outdoor play supports children across every area of their development:

  • Physical Health & Fitness: Daily movement builds strength, stamina, coordination, and healthy habits.

  • Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being: Being outdoors reduces stress, improves mood, and builds emotional resilience.

  • Social & Communication Skills: Play encourages cooperation, negotiation, sharing, and lasting friendships across different age groups.

  • Creativity & Problem Solving: Open-ended play lets children explore, build, test ideas, and develop critical thinking in real-time.

  • Better Focus in the Classroom: Children return from active, outdoors play refreshed, energized, and ready to learn.

Gear Up for Winter Play: What Your Child Needs

There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing! To ensure all children can continue to enjoy the benefits of outdoor play right through the autumn and winter months, please ensure they bring the correct kit to school every day.

Essential Winter Play Kit

  • Waterproof Coat with Hood: Essential for keeping dry during damp or rainy days.

  • Wellington Boots (Wellies): Required for playing on the grass and field when it becomes wet or muddy.

  • Warm Accessories: Hats, gloves, and scarves for colder days.

Top Tip for Parents: Please send your child into school with a spare pair of socks or tights to keep in their peg bag or school bag. Even with the best wellies, splashy outdoor play can lead to damp feet, and having a spare pair ensures your child stays warm and dry back in the classroom!

Please ensure all coats, boots, and spare clothing are clearly labeled with your child’s name.

Parent Views and Ideas

Our OPAL journey is a community effort, and your voice matters! We want to work closely with parents and carers to make our playtimes the absolute best they can be—whether that’s gathering feedback, sharing ideas, or collecting loose parts and play resources.

We would love to hear your thoughts on our outdoor play provision.
